Laser 558 commenced broadcasting in 1984 from the Radio ship MV communicator, a former survey vessel.
The broadcast transmitters were a pair of CSI 25 kilowatt AM transmitters. The station was operated by American citizens, which gave it a new and exciting sound the station soon attacked good numbers of listeners. But it was plagued by financial problem combined with continued government surveillance "Eurosiege"
On 6th November 1986 the Communicator had been plagued by generator problems and after a night of heavy storms on the North Sea, the Gardline Tracker it sister ship took up position along side the MV Communicator. Both ships then headed for Harwich. On 7th November the Communicator was put under arrest and was moored on the River Stour, off Edwarton Ness near Harwich suffolk. Pictured below
